Key West - Fantasy Fest (Halloween 2007)
We’ve been to Key West several times since moving to Miami, but have never been for Fantasy Fest. We didn’t have any
idea what to expect, but it turned out to be one of the funnest festivals we’ve been to. So we took the www.keywestexpress.com ferry Friday morning to avoid the long drive. This is the busiest weekend in Key West, and there is only a one lane road each
direction for the normal 4 hour drive down, but it turns into a 16 hour drive down during Fantasy Fest weekend. The well stocked ferry
(bar and food) takes us directly to Duval St in Key West, what else could you ask for?
There are parties all week, and the first one we attended was the walking parade on Friday afternoon. This was a giant
costume party with all the locals dressed up in Halloween costumes, walking down Caroline Street, and going from bed and breakfast to
bed and breakfast as each one was giving out a free drink. Stacy dressed in a jungle outfit and Mel donned a cheetah pimp outfit for the
parade and the party we went to later. The walking parade was amazing, having a mile long procession of people in costume walking
down the street. This is the most people in costume we have ever seen and we were glad to be part of the parade.
Key West Fantasy Fest - Painted Costumes Galore!
Saturday’s Fantasy Fest parade draws the largest crowd of the year to Key West. All ages and sexes, but the funnest part
is the happy people trying to come up with the most creative and best costume. Fantasy Fest is famous for having painted costumes
where the shirt (or whole outfit) is actually painted on people and you can barely even tell that they don’t have on actual clothing.
Saturday night is the actual float parade down Duval St, so it is packed with a tropical Mardi Gras atmosphere, themed floats, beads,
and lots of spirits.
It is hard to describe until you are in Key West, but during FantasyFest is is completely normal to see a group of bunnies
getting out of a cab, the best bodypainting in the world, and the most creative costumes. We will definitely come back for FantasyFest
as this is festival where everyone has fun dressing up.
